A headshot is one simple portrait of your head and shoulders, there to show people what you look like. Personal branding photography is a longer shoot that builds a library of images showing who you are and what you do: portraits and working shots as well as settings and details. Headshots suit profiles. Brand photography suits websites and ongoing content.
Photographers don’t agree on what these words mean, so it’s easy to book the wrong thing. To some, any portrait is a headshot. Others will sell you a 30-minute studio session and call it a “branding shoot”.
What counts is the job the pictures have to do for you. Below you’ll find how headshots and personal branding photography compare, what each usually costs in the UK, and how to pick between them.
We don’t sell our brand photography as a fixed package. We quote for you. The fee depends on how long we shoot for and how many looks and locations you want. It also depends on how many finished images you need and where you’ll use them.

A headshot is a close portrait. It’s usually head and shoulders, often against a plain background. It exists for recognition. People see your face and feel they know who they’re dealing with before you’ve spoken.
They’re quick. The session is short, the setting is simple and you come away with a small number of edited images. Use them for:
Personal branding photography is a shoot planned around your brand. You get a varied set of pictures that tell people about you: the work you do, where you do it, how you go about it and what you care about.
On a typical brand shoot you might get:
What you end up with is a brand image library. That’s enough pictures to fill a website and keep your social media looking consistent for months.
| Headshots | Personal branding photography | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Show what you look like | Show who you are and what you do |
| Typical length | Short session | Several hours, sometimes a full day |
| Images | A handful | Dozens to hundreds |
| Setting | Usually studio or plain background | Several looks and locations |
| Planning | Minimal | Planned around your brand and how images will be used |
| Best for | Profiles, bios, team pages | Websites, social content, ads, press kits |
Prices vary a lot between regions and photographers. What’s in the package changes them too, so treat the figures below as a guide.
According to Airtasker’s UK cost guide, corporate headshots cost £100 to £200, with a median of £150 (last updated November 2023).
A brand shoot runs longer and delivers more images, so it costs more. In October 2026, packages published by UK photographers started at about £400 for a three-hour session with 20 photos. A half or full day with 100 to 250 edited images came in at roughly £800 to £1,350. Some half- and full-day packages reached £1,500 to £1,900. A short one-hour headshot refresh with around 15 edited images was about £350.
Work out the cost per usable image as well as the session fee. If a brand shoot gives you 100 pictures you’ll really use, each one can end up cheaper than the images from several separate headshot sessions. For the bigger picture, read how much personal branding costs in the UK.
Starting a brand from nothing? Photography usually comes early, before the website. We go into the reasons in what order to build your personal brand in.
Plan the uses before anything else. Write down where the pictures will go, whether that’s website pages, social posts, a book jacket or a speaker page. Your photographer can then shoot the right shapes and leave room for text.
Agree a shot list ahead of the day so you both know which scenes and settings you need, down to the small details. Choose outfits with your brand in mind, in colours that suit your visual identity and that will hold up across lots of images. For locations, go for places that tell your story: your workspace, somewhere connected to your work, or a studio dressed to match the mood.
Expect nerves. Most people loosen up after the first half hour, and a good photographer will direct you the whole way through.
Finally, check usage before you book. Ask whether you can use the images in ads and press as well as print, and whether any limits apply. As GOV.UK explains, copyright arises automatically when a work is created. So the terms of your agreement count for a lot.
Yes. Lots of personal branding photographers fit classic headshots into a brand shoot, normally at the start while you still look fresh. Need both? One longer session is usually simpler and better value than two separate bookings. A good brand photography session gives you a clean headshot for your profiles plus a wider library for everything else.
Our brand photography covers portraits and studio or location work, along with full brand image libraries, all planned around how you’ll use the pictures. We also build personal brand websites and run social media, so we shoot with the finished pages and posts already in our heads. Start a conversation and we’ll plan your shoot together.
That depends on how you’ll use them. A small website needs a hero image plus a few supporting pictures per page, while posting on social media every week eats through far more. Map out where the images will appear, then ask your photographer how many usable images a session normally delivers.
Update them whenever you look noticeably different, say after a new hairstyle, new glasses or a change in weight, or when the style stops fitting your brand. People should recognise you from your photo when they meet you in person.
Wear what you’d wear to do your best work, in colours that suit your brand. Pack a few options with different layers and textures. Leave busy patterns and logos at home, and make sure everything fits well and feels comfortable.
A studio is better for control over light and background, which is what classic headshots need. A location is better for context and story, which suits brand imagery. Plenty of brand shoots use both. They start with portraits and then move on to working and lifestyle shots.
Usually you can, but read the licence from your photographer first. Some agreements restrict commercial or paid use, or charge extra for it, so confirm the terms when you book.
